Reason was identified by Plato as one of humans' several faculties for interacting with the world around them. Enlightenment thinkers were enamoured of rational thought, and believed that it could transcend the subjectivity and positionality of those who exercised it in order to get to the underlying Truths that structured the universe. Practitioners of reason used logic and the scientific method, coupled with empirical observations of the world, in order to formulate various theorems and laws about how the world worked.
