The Union of the Hideously and Improbably Deformed, "an agnostic-style 12-step support-group" "unofficially founded in London in B.S. 1940 [to] afford the scopophobic empathic fellowship and the genesis of sturdy inner resources through shame-free and unconstrained concealment" (226). Unlike the actual 12-step Alcoholics Anonymous program which calls on its members to acknowledge their addiction but then to fight it, UHID asks its members to acknowledge their hideousness, their shame, and their desire to hide from the world, but also calls for its members to embrace it, rather than resist. The members of UHID justify their use of veils by the fact that they are truthful and open about the fact that they want to hide.

Joelle van Dyne aka Madame Psychosis is a member, and reads their announcement on the air at WYYY.
