This 'hideous' theme is closely tied to the theme of Narcissism, and appears most blatantly in Brief Interview # 31's discussion of the various types of selfish men. Selfishness does not only exist in the sense of focusing on the self , but as described in Brief Interview #31, one can be so selfless that he is in at the very root selfish. This theme is typically identified in relation to ideas of Objectification/Control and Low Self-Esteem, and is one of the driving motivations behind many of the men's sexual desire in "Brief Interviews With Hideous Men". Selfishness is closely associated with the use of blame in the Brief Interviews because of the way in which Brief Interviews #42, #48, and #51 particularly involve an 'other' individual as a means of identifying or processing through internal issues.
