Rick Vigorous is Lenore Beadsman's boss in The Broom of the System, and his pursuit of Lenore's love illustrates some of the novel's themes about communication as well as self/other. Rather than communicating his love for her in a straightforward manner, he tells her about his feelings through stories that he has received at work for his publishing company, electing to communicate at an unnecessary level of abstraction and demonstrating the difficulties of genuine communication. Rick also demonstrates the Self's need to control the Other. To be with her is not enough for Rick, as he makes it clear throughout the novel that he wishes to possess and control her. At the novel's climax, he handcuffs her to himself, hoping to "have" her for good.
