Lenore Stonecipher Beadsman is the protagonist of The Broom of the System.
Also refers to Lenore Beadsman, her grandmother. The name is the same, but its use is different. “Lenore Beadsman” has no inherent meaning, and refers to two entirely different yet related people. It is significant that Wittgenstein himself compared of the relationships between various components of language to “family resemblances” (Boswell, 21).
She is 24 years old for most of the novel, and is a telephone switchboard operator by trade. She works at a publishing firm called Frequent and Vigorous Publishing. Throughout most of the novel, however, telephone lines are crossed and Lenore spends much of her work time redirecting people who have called by mistake. She works with sassy Walinda Peahen. Lenore becomes romantically involved with Rick Vigorous. She is friends with Candy Mandible, and also, though Rick Vigorous would challenge this, is the owner of a talented cockatiel named Vlad the Impaler.
Lenore and Language
Lenore Beadsman constantly struggles with what it means to be alive, and what it means to truly communicate. She considers language an imperfect means, and tries futilely to reconcile her emotions with an inadequate means of expressing them.
