Gramma Beadsman, whose name is also Lenore, is a key character in The Broom of the System. Her disappearance from her nursing home is central to the novel's plotline. Earlier in life, she had been a student of Wittgenstein. Wittgenstein's philosophy informs Gramma Beadsman's worldview in that she believes, and subsequently convinces Lenore, that "something's meaning is nothing more or less than its function."
