"Gaudeamus igitur" is Latin for "Let us therefore rejoice," and is the opening line of the song De Brevitate Vitae (on the Shortness of Life). It is often sung at Europen university commencements, and the "lyrics reflect an endorsement of the bacchanalian mayhem of student life while simultaneously retaining the grim knowledge that one day we will all die."

In Infinite Jest, "Gaudeamus igitur" is part of the heading for sections that relate important annual events at the Enfield Tennis Academy, events which have academic significance and also a pseudo-religious subtext.
