David Foster Wallace's alma mater. He met his friend Mark Costello while a sophomore at the college.

Featured heavily in The Broom of the System.

Wallace's senior honors thesis in English later became The Broom of the System.

In May 1999, Amherst College awarded Wallace an Honorary Doctorate of Letters degree. At the ceremony, he gave the speech about prescriptive and descriptive grammar that is included in Consider the Lobster under the title "Authority and American Usage."

After Wallace's death, the college published an online article about Wallace's death, including a link to the audio recording from the Amherst memorial service.
