convergance culture

This week's reading was based on the book "Convergence Culture" by Henry Jenkins, which discusses the fusion of old and new media in today's society. In chapter 2, entitled " Buying into American Idol : How we are being sold on reality television," Jenkins discusses the reality tv craze that has come about in the late 90s all throughout the past decade, and the incredibly popularity that has come about from the American Idol phenomenon.

Game vs story

In this weeks readings, the topic of a video game narrative vs a story narrative was talked about. In the "Cyberdrama" readings, an essay by Janat Murray discusses the relationships between games and stories, and questions which came first, the game or the story?

How real can a virtual community feel?

In this week's readings, we discussed the concept of virtual communities and internet ties between people. This is a massively popular form of communication today, people are no longer constructed by the physical nature of life, as they can find interesting people with common interests from all over the world. This internet friendships at times often break through the boundary of cyberspace into the real world, creating an interesting dynamic between the digital space of the internet to real life, and how exactly the two seem to interact in today's day and age.

race in cyberspace and online tourism

In this weeks readings, the concept of race playing a large factor in online interaction was brought up. One would think that in a zone that is seemingly free of normal societal and bodily constraints, race would not be an issue. Yet the fantasy of cyberspace can only go so far, and although we may try and run from our physical properties by creating cat avatars or pretending to be something we're not, race will always follow.

rape in cyberspace? hmm...

In this week's readings, we discussed the concept of the immersion our society finds itself in when using online games such as MUDs for entertainment. Where is the line drawn between reality and cyberspace, between a subject as horrifying as rape and a violent computer game character? Is there even a distinction between what happens in virtual reality as opposed to the real world?

Term project proposal

For my term project, I would like to do something that is more creative as opposed to an analytical paper. However, I am not quite sure what that is. I definitely want to further research virtual reality websites such as second life and our society's obsession with escaping real life for role playing, as if that is somehow better. I can definitely see the immense attraction to a website like second life, and the ability to be whoever you want in an online fantasy, all the whil having the ability to socialize, which gives the game even more authenticity.

Hypermediacy

In this weeks reading, we discussed the chapter out of the book Remediation : understanding New Media by Jay Bolter and Richard Grusin. This chapter disucusses the most key elements of new media which are immediacy, hypermediacy, and remediation. These concepts represent the immersment of the user in their selected form of media. I find it interesting that these words represent the furthering of immersment within a selected medium.

Hypertext and Nonlinearity Theory

In this weeks readings, we learned about the early concepts of hypertext as a way of interactive readings, initially modeled after the "choose your own adventure" books. Although some people believe that hypertext is distracting, proving to be a disadvantage to the usual purity of a continued reading experience. Hypertext allows reading to be more interactive, and personalized. Hypertext was the beginnings to computer games, as the personalized readings.

For my midterm project, I want to discuss the website "Match.com". First of all, I would like to explore the appeal that Match.com and other dating websites has, because I feel that these websites go along with the same overall "instant satisfaction" aspect of the internet today, and it really fascinates me that this idea of instant gratifictation from the internet would transcend into the dating/relationships aspect of humanity, so all we have to do is sign up for a website, post a few well selected pictures of ourselves, pay a monthly fee, and this will lead us to love.
