What is the Internet (to you)?

One of the sub-headings of our reading this week was, “What is the Internet?” The Federal Networking Council agrees that the Internet refers to the global information system that is:

  • logically linked together by a globally unique address space based on Internet Protocol… (did they just use the word Internet to define internet?)
  • able to support communications using the TCP/IP protocol
  • provides, uses, or makes accessible, either publicly or privately, high level services layered on the communications and related infrastructure described herein.

To me, the internet is a collection of people coming together to share information and technology. It is a means of communicating in numerous forms. I don’t generally try to visualize all of the internet at one time, but I think of a giant web. I use it for reading news, communicating, gaming, learning, and scheduling.

What do you think of as ‘The Internet’? What do you use it for outside of reading news and learning? Niche interest groups? Direct to consumer sales? What random websites do you frequent? Lets hear some juicy stuff 🙂

I frequent CheapAssGamer.com, a website dedicated to finding deals on video games.

    1. I think of the internet in a similar way. I think it is a place for people to come together and share information, ideas and interests, and is a great way to stay connected to people and communicate with them.
I use the internet mainly for school purposes, social networking and learning. When I’m with friends I use the internet mainly for entertainment. We usually sit around the computer laughing at youtube videos 🙂 I also use the internet for shopping from time to time. As for random sites, I also visit forums about book series that I read to see what other people think of them, and to learn about any insights people have caught on to for future books in the series.

The more I use the internet, the more I see it a an open marketplace where the world interacts… with social media like My space and Facebook, the world has become a smaller place. In response to your question, the Internet is my source for news, to catch up with family and friends, my source for learning , medical information and all things I find meaningful or not. Oh yes I sometimes access Youtube to catch up all things Nigerian/African.

    3. I think the internet is like a giant cafeteria. Some people use it for socializing, some people use it for consumption, and some people use it for business. I think it’s really hard to quantify what the internet “is” because it can be anything, everything, and sometimes nothing. While I think about all the things I do online: research, shopping, entertainment, keeping up with friends, avoiding people, etc. There are actually quite a few places we can’t go on the internet (Check out Lisa Parks “Kinetic Screens”)

    4. Oh yes…..I go to crazy Japanese hair websites:
